Interim Chair, Program Director
Dr. Charles L. Rosen directs the research program for the department and is a specialist in cranial base surgery. He also has advanced training in neuro-oncology, spinal cord tumors, pediatric neurosurgery, and complex spine surgery. He received his medical degree and Ph.D. from New York University and advanced training in neurosurgery at George Washington University. Dr. Rosen is studying a new combination of drugs to improve the outcome of patients who have had a stroke. He is also developing new ways to diagnose and treat brain tumors and injuries from trauma.

Dr. Bhatia specializes in cranial, spinal, and pediatric neurosurgery. He completed his medical training at Maulana Azad Medical College in Delhi, India. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, followed by fellowships in pediatric neurosurgery at Detroit Medical Center, and neuro-anesthesia at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Bhatia is board-certified in anesthesiology and board-eligible in neurosurgery. |
Dr. John J. Collins is a board certified neurosurgeon with an additional subspecialty board certification in pediatric neurosurgery. He is an active member of the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons. Dr. Collins earned his bachelor's degree at Duke University and his medical degree at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciencesin Bethesda, Maryland. He completed his neurosurgeical residency training at the National Naval Medical Center, followed by a neurosurgical fellowship at Allegheny General Hospital. He received fellowship training in pediatric neurosurgery at the University of Utah's Primary Children's Medical Center. |

D r. Todd Harshbarger treats patients with simple and complex diseases of the spine and neck and also provides a broad spectrum of care for patients with cerebrovascular diseases, cranial and skull-based tumors, and functional brain disorders. Dr. Harshbarger earned his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School and completed advanced training at Stanford, Emory University and West Virginia University. He is a former staff physician and field surgeon for the U.S. Army.

Dr. Julien is a surgical neuro-oncologist, a neurosurgeon who diagnoses and treats patients who have tumors of the brain, spine, and spinal cord. He is also experienced in radiosurgery, a procedure which uses radiation to treat tumors, facial pain, and other functional brain disorders. He also has advanced training in molecular neuro-oncology, spinal column metastasis and complex spine surgery. His specialty interests include Brain Tumors, Computer-Assisted Image-Guided Neurosurgery, and Radiosurgery. His spinal surgery interests are in cervical spine disorders (particular cervical disc disease, spondylosis, and myelopathy), spine tumors, and minimally invasive spine procedures (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar). Dr. Julien joins WVU from Togus VA Medical Center in Maine. He earned his medical degree from Howard University. He completed specialty training at the New York University Medical Center and at SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse. Dr. Julien is working on novel techniques to treat malignant primary and metastatic brain tumors through immunotherapy, radiosensitizers and by using nanotechnology. |
Clinical instructor in neurosurgery and senior surgical physician assistant. He has completed training at the Community College of Allegheny College, Penn State University, and West Virginia University. He is Board Certified in Medicine and Surgery. Mr. McFadden has been named a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. His specialties include cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, peripheral vascular surgery, and ophthalmology. His interests are cerebrovascular disorders, spinal diseases, and trigeminal neuralgia. |
Professor Emeritus and former Chairman of the Department, Dr. Nugent is internationally known for his treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. He travels extensively to teach his techniques for trigeminal neuralgia and neurosurgical treatment of pain. |
Dr. Joseph L. Voelker has had many years of experience in a wide range of neurosurgical disorders and procedures, but he is a specialist in the neurosurgical treatment of aneurysms and AVMs, pituitary tumors, and acoustic neurinoma. He received his medical degree from Indiana University and completed his advanced residency training at Indiana University and the University of Western Ontario. |
Dr. Michael Oh treats chronic pain, Parkinson's Disease, pituitary tumors, spinal cord Injuries, and Tic Douloureux. He is involved in research in Deep Brain Stimulation and Image-Guided/Computed Assisted Surgery. |
Dr. Donald M. Whiting specializes in the surgical treatment of movement disorders, and neurosurgical management of pain. |
