Answers to Google’s top health searches: How can I get rid of love handles?

By Dana King, MD, MS

Love handles – nobody loves them, yet many of us have those deposits of excess fat on the sides of our waistlines. So what can be done?

Reducing excess fat through diet and exercise is the best way to get toned abs; it’s a myth that you can spot reduce fat loss by exercising a targeted area, like love handles. Stomach crunches may make those muscles a little stronger, but the fat in the area may remain the same.

Eating the right foods will help boost your energy all day long, so you actually eat less. Add more beans, fruits, lean protein, low-fat dairy products, vegetables, and whole grains to your diet. Try these healthy recipes to get you started.

Instead of spot-reducing exercises for love handles, try running, biking, or walking regularly. Short, intense bursts of exercise with less intense moves or complete rest in between, called high-intensity interval training, can increase your base metabolism and burn more calories for minutes or hours afterwards – even while you are resting. The best way to say goodbye to your love handles is a balanced program of a healthy diet and regular exercise.
