Dental and Dental Hygiene students give their attention to Special Smiles

Dentistry and dental hygiene students from the West Virginia University School of Dentistry were among more than 200 volunteers at the West Virginia Special Olympics Summer Games the first weekend of June.

The summer games bring in athletes from around the state to complete in a variety of sporting events including track and field, cornhole, bocce, softball, swimming, tennis and golf.

Between competitions, School of Dentistry students work with the athletes to promote positive oral health practices and provide screenings.

The goal of West Virginia Special Olympics is to bring mentally challenged participants together in an atmosphere with acceptance and respect.

Special Smiles helps WVSO in its mission to provide comfortable settings for children and adults to not only participate in group and individual sports but to also promote overall well-being among athletes.
