Message from the Director
Welcome to the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Training Program at West Virginia University. Our program is located in the picturesque Morgantown, WV, which is located along the Monongahela River approximately 90 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, PA. We are extremely proud of our program and of our top-notch residents, both past and present. We currently provide a four-year training program with three residents in each level of training. Our training provides for the progressive responsibility for each of our residents in all of the areas throughout their four years of training. We offer experience in general Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as in all subspecialty areas including, perinatology, gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology, infertility, and urogynecology. Our subspecialists in each area work directly with residents not fellows, therefore providing an enhanced education for our residents.
Unique Features of Our Program:
We are located in a university setting that is housed in a rural community. Morgantown itself has a population of about 27,000 residents, which doubles during the academic year because of WVU’s enrollment of around 26,000 students. Monongalia County only has a population of about 82,000, giving residents a true small-town quality of living, while still offering all of the cultural and technological opportunities that a university provides.
Access to the state-of-the-art WVU Recreation Center
Because we don’t offer any subspecialty fellowships in our department, our residents are first-line learners in each subspecialty and obtain in-depth experience in areas such as Maternal Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology, Infertility and Urogynecology.
We are a Women’s Center of Excellence which provides our institution with a national grant to provide comprehensive multidisciplinary care to women. We are 1 of only 12 sites in the country bestowed this honor.
We have two DaVinci dual console robots as well as a training simulator for training residents to be certified in minimally invasive robotic surgery upon graduation
Our department boasts a research division which is led by a world renowned researcher in the field of Reproductive Immunology and Molecular Biology, Dr. Rajesh Naz, who has published over 200 peer-reviewed full-length articles in prestigious journals in his field, and has authored/edited 8 books. His lab has been continuously funded for over 25 years by grants from various federal, state, local, and private agencies.

School of Dentistry
A close working relationship exists between faculty and our residents. Most of our faculty have private clinics on site at our Physician’s Office Center, allowing constant availability for supervision of residents. However, autonomy is both encouraged and respected with our residents in order to foster appropriate levels of learning.
Our residents are a wonderful group of physicians. They work hard and provide outstanding care to patients in the surrounding tri-state area. I think I can speak for our entire department when I say that we all enjoy what we do and we love the way of life that the beauty and tranquility of West Virginia provides to us and our families. Choosing a residency is an important decision. I invite you to explore our department information on this site and I welcome your future interest in becoming part of our family of residents.
We are very fortunate to have a complete health science center here at WVU, which allows for multi-disciplinary educational opportunities for our residents. In addition to our School of Medicine, our campus also houses a School of Dentistry and both Nursing and Allied Health Programs. At the present time our Graduate Medical Education program has almost 400 residents-in-training.
