West Virginia University School of Medicine will be using VSAS, the Visiting Student Application Service, to receive visiting student applications for the 2012-2013 academic year. Applications may be submitted through VSAS starting on May 1, 2012. To apply to our institution, please complete and send us a VSAS application for your preferred electives and dates. VSAS is only available for use by students enrolled in a U.S. LCME accredited school or a VSAS participating COCA accredited AACOM member college. For more information on VSAS, please visit www.aamc.org/vsas.
Visiting Student Program following the guidelines set forth in the LCME memo of July 1989, a limited number of clinical electives are available for students from LCME and AACOM accredited medical schools who have completed their basic clinical curriculum (Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Surgery, and Family Medicine). Visiting students are limited to a maximum of two (2) one month electives. Our students have first priority in selecting rotations and consequently we cannot always accommodate visiting students at the time or in the discipline requested.
Visiting students must have current student status in an accredited LCME or AACOM medical school. Students will be required to provide a Dean’s letter with written verification of professional liability coverage and verification of current immunizations and titer results. All blood tests (titer results) must be provided as copies of lab reports. Physician documentation as positive or negative alone will not suffice.
Students are, also, required to have health insurance and current OSHA training. Students who rotate through the WVU Medical School from LCME or AACOM accredited medical schools are required to show current and satisfactory completion of their school's HIPAA training. For ease of identification upon arrival we request that a recent photo be sent with your application.
We will begin processing visiting student applications via VSAS on May 1. Arrangements may never be made solely with the elective supervisor. A processing fee of $50.00 payable to University Health Associates is required once the rotation has been approved. After the application is processed, the Visiting Student will be notified as to whether or not he/she has been accepted. West Virginia University School of Medicine Morgantown and Eastern campuses do not provide housing. A short listing of available housing for the Morgantown campus can be requested by emailing Brenda Michael at bmichael@hsc.wvu.edu.
