NOTICES:
GOLD HUMANISM WEEK will take place for the 2nd time from Monday February 13th - Friday February 17th.  The highlight of the week will be a 12 NOON lecture series (see attached flyer).   Food will be provided for the first 100 people.  On Wednesday, we will show the movie “Awakenings”, a film based on the 1973 memoir by Oliver Sacks.  Tuesday, February 14th is National Solidarity Day.  On this day we will be distributing gold ribbons, to be worn in support of the practice of humanism in medicine.  Throughout the week we will be collecting non-perishable items (canned goods/toiletry items) as part of Cans for Caritas – to be donated to the local Caritas House which supports local individuals affected by HIV/AIDS.  The final event for Gold Humanism Week is the recognition of a Golden Student Star.  This award is to be given to a HSC student who has gone out of their way to help others.  If you would like to nominate a student to receive this award, please email Allison Norrod at anorrod@mix.wvu.edu with your nomination.  We hope you will join us in our celebration of humanism in medicine next week – February 13-17, 2012.

ARNOLD P. GOLD FOUNDATION 2012 ESSAY CONTEST:  2012 Humanism in Medicine Essay Contest.  The topic this year focuses on the medical student as a “steward of medicine”.  1st place: $1000; 2nd place: $500; 3rd place: $250.  DEADLINE: April 5, 2012.  Please see attachment for entry information.

TO CLASSES MS1 THROUGH MS4:  This year the community service chairs of the MS1 and MS2 classes will be putting on a TALENT SHOW!  The details are still coming together so please watch for updates in the following weeks.  The talent show is scheduled for March 16th from 6:00-9:00 PM in Okey Patteson Auditorium.  Please see THE attached word document with details such as areas for volunteering/participating, opportunities for community service hours, and admission information.  We hope that everyone is excited and can come out to support the talents of our classmates.

EVER WONDER WHAT OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE IS?:  What is a manipulation and how is it used?  How does training differ between Allopathic medical schools and Osteopathic medical schools?  Come join us at the AMSA meeting to find out more!  Great food and a good time guaranteed!  The meeting will be Wednesday,

SUMMER REGISTRATION AND AID:
All students remain registered through the Summer Session to ensure professional liability coverage.  2011-12 FAFSA is used to process summer 2012 aid.  You should receive information concerning available financial aid for summer 2012 by late March or early April.

2012-13 Free Application for Federal Aid
is available now on-line at www.fafsa.gov.  To receive maximum consideration for financial aid, the 2012-13 FAFSA must be received by the federal processor by March 1st.  The 12-13 FAFSA is used to process aid from August 2012 - August 2013 - essentially Fall 2012, Spring 2013 and Summer 2013. 

RUN FOR COVER 5K:  Want to start the spring out right? Run for a good cause. The AMA and AMWA sponsored Run for Cover is a 5K charity run to support the Bartlett house, a homeless shelter in downtown Morgantown. There will be divisions for both runners and walkers. The race will be held on Sunday, March 18th 2012 at the Rail Trail in Star City. Check-in starts at 1:00 PM and the race starts at 2:30 PM. Registration is $15 (includes guaranteed t-shirt) until February 28th and $20 if signing up after February 28th or on race-day (no t-shirt guarantee). There will also be a silent auction on race day consisting of donations from numerous local businesses, so even if running is not your thing, you can still contribute to this worthy cause. HEALTH RELATED COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY:  Project REACH will be holding a health education and screening fair in Caretta, WV, on Saturday,
February 25th from 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM.  Anyone who is interested in volunteering please contact projectreachwv@gmail.com.  We will be carpooling from Morgantown.

FMIG and IMIG are holding a clothing drive, Covers for the Cold. All medical students may receive 1 service hour for a $10 donation or used item in good condition of equivalent worth. We will be collecting blankets, sleeping bags, backpacks, cotton and thermal socks and underwear (new only) for men and women in all sizes, gloves, hats, scarves, instant soup, chemical pack hand and foot warmers, and also personal hygiene products. The collection box will be in the Family Medicine department until Wednesday, February 29th. Attached is a donation sheet that each student fills out and places in the box with their donation. WVU AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (AMA) will be hosting its annual state conference in Charleston, WV,  March 16 – March 17, 2012.  The event will run from Friday evening until Saturday afternoon.  This event is a joint event between the WVU and Marshall Schools of Medicine and will include clinical skills workshop sessions (Wilderness Medicine, Laparoscopic Skills, and Outpatient Skills), lecturers from WVU and Marshall, a social event, and a community service event.  Four hours of community service are available.  Cost will be approximately $25.00.  Please contact Brent Hanson a bhanson@mix.wvu.edu if you are interested in attending.  More details to come.
ANESTHESIOLOGY INTEREST GROUP (AIG)  is hosting an intubation workshop at the SIM Center on February 16, 2012, from 2:00-4:00 PM.  There will be different stations to rotate through:  masked ventilation, assessing the need to intubate in a trauma patient and practicing intubation.  We will have residents and faculty there to assist you at the stations.  Email wvu.aig@gmail.com or kgeroni2@mix.wvu.edu to RSVP.  There is a limit of 15 medical students for the event.
