In DBT, the concept of mindfulness is about our connection to both the present moment and our connection to all things in the universe, which are also happening in the present moment. Patients commonly report that this feels abstract, or even irrelevant to their life. This is understandable. for people with overwhelming emotions, being "connected to the universe" is a pretty lofty idea, which can feel disconnected from the task of getting through the next painful moment without self-destructing. At the same time, it is that connection to the universe, the feeling of having a place in the cosmos, that can make pushing through the next moment to get closer to a life worth living seem feasible.

A little inspiration for feeling connected can go a long way. In this brief video, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson describes his thoughts on his own connection to the universe.
