Emergency Medicine Procedures Workshop
The 2012 WVU Emergency Medicine Procedures Workshop will be held June 7-9, 2012, at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center in Morgantown, West Virginia. DOWNLOAD PRINTABLE REGISTRATION FORM
The Emergency Medicine Procedures Workshop is presented by the WVU Department of Emergency Medicine, and is sponsored by the WVU School of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education.
Following this course, participants should be able to:

Understand the indications, contraindications, technique, and potential complications of various procedures that are performed in the emergency department, including:
-
SOFT TISSUE PROCEDURES
Laceration repair, basic suturing techniques, use of staples and tissue adhesives
Incision and drainage of cutaneous abscesses
Local anesthesia, regional nerve blocks

OPHTHALMOLOGIC & ENT PROCEDURES
Use of tonopen, slit lamp exam, removal of corneal foreign bodies
Nasal packing for Epistaxis, removal of optic and nasal foreign bodies

AIRWAY PROCEDURES
Basic airway management, endotracheal intubation, surgical airway management

CARDIOTHORACIC & VASCULAR PROCEDURES
Chest tube thoracostomy, resuscitative thoracotomy, pericardiocentesis, emergency cardiac pacing, thoracentesis
Central venous catheter insertion, arterial line placement, intraosseous line placement

ABDOMINAL PROCEDURES
Paracentesis

GENITOURINARY PROCEDURES
Foley catheter placement, suprapubic bladder catheterization

ORTHOPEDIC PROCEDURES
Splint application, reduction of common joint dislocations (shoulder, elbow, finger, hip, ankle), arthrocentesis

ULTRASOUND
FAST exam, gall bladder exam, renal exam, pelvic ultrasound for 1st trimester pregnancy, ultrasound-guided line placement

NEUROLOGIC PROCEDURES
Lumbar puncture

Demonstrate an ability to apply these procedures in the context of a clinical scenario via simulated patient encounters in the simulation laboratory.
Physicians (MDs or DOs), physician assistants, and nurse practitioners are eligible to attend.
