Rotating Medical Students

The West Virginia University Department of Emergency Medicine offers electives to medical students in the 4th year. Rotations can be 4 weeks or one month long. During your rotation you will work closely with both faculty and upper level emergency medicine residents. The majority of your shifts will be spent at our level 1 trauma center, Ruby Memorial Hospital. You will also spend 1-2 shifts at our offsite state of the art Urgent Care and have the option to schedule a day of ambulance ride alongs.

Students will receive a didactic schedule on the first day of the rotation. Some didactics will be attended along side the residents, like Grand Rounds, Morbidity and Mortality, and Journal Club. There also case based lectures that are just for medical students. Most months there is also the opportunity to spend time in our simulation center.

Final grades are based on daily evaluation forms filled out at the end of each shift.

Monthly Schedule

Students are given parameters on the first day of the month to make their own schedule with other students working in the department that month. Students work 8 hour shifts and will do shifts in the day, the evening, and overnight. Students are asked to work 2 weekend shifts throughout the month.
