What is the WVU Emergency Medicine Certificate Program (EMCP)?
EMCP is an online library of courses covering the core content of Emergency Medicine, offered to medical professionals seeking education in this exciting and challenging specialty. It is a 100% web-based program derived largely from the didactic content of our EM residency program.
Who is eligible to participate in EMCP?
EMCP is open to physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.
How is EMCP delivered?
EMCP courses are delivered using WVU’s own Secure Online Environment (SOLE), a portal designed and maintained just for students enrolled in the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.
What is the schedule for EMCP?
EMCP courses are released each fall and spring semester in accordance with WVU’s academic calendar. Classes are approximately 12 weeks in length, including 10 weeks of coursework, 1 week of review, and 1 week for the comprehensive final. Most students enroll in at least 2 courses per semester, finishing the program within 2 years.
What is the coursework for a typical week and how much time is involved?
Each week’s work releases on Monday and includes lectures, readings, SOLEcasts (like podcasts), written assignments, and supplemental items like links and videos. In addition there are electronic quizzes every 2-3 weeks. Students report spending roughly 4-6 hours per week on the work for each course.
Do I have to complete ALL of the courses or do them in any particular order?
The courses do not have to be completed in a particular order. Successful passage of all 10 (within the 5 year limit) culminates in awarding of a “Certificate of Completion” from the WVU School of Medicine. Students may also select individual courses based on their own interests, and take them whenever offered.
How much does EMCP cost?
Each credit hour costs approximately $650 (price current as of 2014-2015 academic year). EMCP 501-508 are 2 credit hours each, totaling approximately $1300 each. EMCP 509 and 510 are only one credit hour each, totally approximately $650 each. The full certificate can be completed for less than $12,000.
