  • Family Medicine Network Project - a study involving several clinics, evaluating effect of educational interventions on assessment and control of atherosclerotic risk factors in diabetic patients. In progress. PI - Dr. Shannon
  • Recruitable Comunities Project - The Recruitable Community Project is a cooperative effort of the West Virginia University Department of Family Medicine, the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health, and other academic and state agencies. The main objective of the project is to aid rural West Virginia communities in the recruitment of health care providers, particularly family physicians. The emphasis of the project is on the enhancement of the community role in recruitment.  - Dr. Ken Shannon 
  • Education Intervention and Atherosclerotic Risk Factors - a network study of the effect of educational interventions on assessment and control of atherosclerotic risk factors in hyperlipidemic patients in West Virginia. PI - Dr. Shannon
  • Sleeth Family Medicine Breast Screening Study - study examines the current screening for breast disease in an academic Family Medicine clinic and the effect of education regarding current recommendations. PI - Dr. Cutlip, Dr. Fiala

  • Survey of Local (topical) Anesthesia Techniques - a survey of dental and primary care providers regarding knowledge level of topical anesthesia techniques. PI - Dr. Meit
  • Personality Characteristics and Traits of Medical Students that may be Associated with Later Residency Choice, and Identifying Personality Characteristics and Traits Common and/or Unique to Primary Care Physicians - a longitudinal study regarding personality traits of entering medical students and subsequent career choices.   • Health Plan Hypertension Study - a study of assessment for certain atherosclerotic risk factors in an academic family medicine clinic for a hypertensive managed care patient population. PI - Dr. Shannon
  • Immunization/Coupon Book Study - a study of the effect of a reminder system on the immunization rate for children, conducted by medical student externs. PI - Dr. Doyle
  • Adult Immunization Project - a study of adult patient recollection and actual documentation of immunizations, conducted by medical student externs. PI - Dr. Doyle
  • Personality Attributes of Post-baccalaureate Doctor of Pharmacy Students as Determinants of Postgraduate Career and/or Training Choice - a longitudinal study attempting to determine personality attributes of post-baccalaureate Doctor of Pharmacy students which correlate with career and/or training choices following graduation.   • A study of the usefulness of early pregnancy blood screening for prediction of future hyperlipidemia, conducted in a rural site. PI- Dr. Reed
  • A study of significant factors affecting obesity and perception of body image in an adolescescent school population, conducted in a rural residency site. PI - Dr. Cannarella.
  • The Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults in a Rural Primary Care Setting - study assesses the rate of functional illiteracy and marginal literacy in the patient population and compares test scores with the presence or absence of chart notation designed to cue the care provider to patient limitations regarding obstacles to compliance associated with written or complex information.   • Comparison of a Nicotine Replacement Therapy with Wellbutrin SR in a Tobacco Cessation Program - study assesses treatment efficacy rates randomizing moticated quitters to nicotine gum or Wellbutrin SR over a 13 week treatment period with 6 month and 12 month follow-up surveys. PI - Norman Montalto, DO.
  • Exercise Induced Asthma and Vitamin C - study will determine if 500mg Vitamin C improves pulmonary function by measuring FEV(1) at pre-and post-treadmill challenges lasting up to 10 minutes. PI - Randall Swain, DO.
