ALL STUDENTS - FLU SHOT REQUIREMENT:  All MD students are required to post confirmation current flu vaccine to CastleBranch no later than December 1, 2017.  You can receive this vaccine at any health clinic or pharmacy.  Save your confirmation of immunization, e.g. receipt, doctor's note, etc.  Castle Branch will notify you when the report opens to receive this document.

NEW HSC GAME ROOM. As a result of students’ feedback, the Health Science Center will be installing some ping pong/foosball tables and additional vending machines in the lounge near the bookstore within the next 4-6 weeks.  Please remember that we share this and others resources (e.g., study carrels in the blue and gold room) with other learners in the health sciences.   Enjoy!

WVU SOM Wellness Survey - Each class is invited to complete the WVU SOM Wellness Survey through E*Value. The survey will give everyone an opportunity to highlight our best wellness events to date and discuss opportunity for new and exciting programs that fit the needs of the students. While it is not a requirement to complete, we encourage all students to submit the survey it as it will provide data in ongoing research with student wellness. Please take a moment to share your thoughts on our program!

ERAS SCHEDULED OUTAGE ALL ERAS systems will be unavailable starting Friday, Oct. 27 @5pm – Sunday, Oct 29 @5pm. ERAS administration is advising you take any action and print out any information you may need during that time prior to the schedule maintenance.

RURAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM The WVU Department of Family Medicine is pleased to announce that the applications for its innovative Rural Scholars Program are now available. This program is designed for students committed to making rural/small town Family Medicine in West Virginia a career.  Qualified MS III’s are eligible for a $10,000 stipend for their fourth year and facilitated admission to WVU’s Morgantown Family Medicine Residency.  The Rural Scholars Program allows for an enhanced primary care experience in the 4th year curriculum as well as early integration into the residency experience. Deadline for application is January 15, 2018.  Please contact Holly Maroon if you would like information on how to apply.

VOLUNTEER IN THE GROSS ANATOMY LAB. The structure of the lab will be based on stations highlighting the anatomy of the head, neck, and torso. You will earn community service hours for your time, and Dr. Klinkhachorn can advise you as to the amount of time you can count for this lab experience. The current proposed date for this lab is MONDAY, November 6th from 1:00pm-2:00pm (give or take a half n hour on either end).  If you are interested in helping, please email Dr. Kimberly Meigh at kmmeigh@mail.wvu.edu.

SHELF EXAMS Friday, October 20, 2017. The Shelf Exam will be in the Library Computer Lab (First Floor WVU Building). You will have Desktop Computers, NO NEED FOR MAC BOOKS!!! Please arrive by 8:00am so we can check you in by 8:15am and begin at 8:30am.

GTR 0.5 After Shelf Exam GTR 0.5 will take place at noon in ROOM 2000-WVU Building.

TUMOR BOARD - Every Thursday, 8th Floor Classroom, 12:00-1:00pm. Different speakers and topics.  Lunch provided.

PEDS GRAND ROUNDS is broadcast from Morgantown every Wednesday 8-9 am. The first Wednesday is at the board room on the 8th floor of BMC.  Remaining sessions held at the ED conference room in ED of BMC.  If you are on a Pediatrics Week, please plan to attend.

VOLUNTEER SPEAKING OPPORTUNITY – Prostate Cancer Support Group is looking for students to speak on various prostate cancer topics for 15-20 minutes, with a potential Q&A session.  Meetings held 6:30-8:30pm on second Thursday of each month, 2nd floor of Dorothy McCormack Building.  Contact Dr. Paul Kradel, 304-267-2520, if interested.

COMMUNITY SERVICE – Keep the Faith 5K Trail Color Run/Walk, Sat., Nov. 11th, beginning at Poor House Farm Park, Martinsburg, WV.  Registration: 10am; Start time: 11am.  Run your socks off for the homeless – bring a pair of warm socks to donate.  Proceeds from registration fees will benefit Good Samaritan Free Clinic and Faith Community Coalition for the Homeless.  To register use this form. MS3 Class of 2019

MARK YOUR CALENDARS – Getting to Residency (GTR) 0.5, Friday, Oct. 20th, after Morgantown exams.  Specific time TBA.  All campuses – the beginning of your focused drive toward residency.  ATTENDANCE REQUIRED.

NAU MODULE: Dr. Johnson and Dr. Kletter strongly encourage you to review the Surgery clerkship on SOLE for directions/samples for writing admissions orders and brief op notes.  Remember that you need 3 graded H&P’s by the end of the semester.

BOTH MODULES: Be sure you are logging your cases/procedures in E-value.  All case logs MUST be complete prior to final exams, as required by the curriculum.  If you have questions, contact Jane Horst or Michelle Alder at 304-596-6312.

FRIDAY EDUCATION.  Schedule is posted in SOLE for the Fall semester.  This is a tentative schedule, subject to change based on speaker availability.  You will be notified via email of changes in schedule.

OR Lockers – 9 additional lockers are being installed in both the men’s and women’s OR locker rooms to provide additional storage space for staff and students.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES – Fall CHOICES program sponsored by Shepherd University is looking for medical student volunteers for several events.  Grant-funded, interdisciplinary educational program to assist community members who have diabetic/metabolic health issues with making proper food choices. Thur., Oct. 26th, times TBA: Diabetes Awareness Day, Health Fair at SVMS. Mon., Nov. 13th, 4-7pm: Dining with Diabetes at Shepherd University Dining Hall (help with food prep and education to patients) Additional events TBA.  Please contact the project coordinator, Cara Burker, MSN, RN, at 304-876-5789 or CBURKER@shepherd.edu to volunteer.
