About Us
Our mission in the Department of Medicine at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center of West Virginia University is to graduate physicians who have attained the clinical competence to provide excellent care as general internists and sub-specialists. This care includes health promotion, disease prevention, and management of acute and chronic disease. We aim to impart the knowledge, attitudes, and skills required to maintain a systematic and continuous process of self-learning, including critical analysis of the medical literature.
In addition to Categorical Internal Medicine, we offer a well-established and integrated combined program in Medicine/Pediatrics. Opportunities for subspecialty training are also available in Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Geriatrics, Palliative Medicine, Nephrology, Infectious Diseases, Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Advanced Endoscopy.
All the training programs have a progressive, integrated curriculum that provides structure but also flexibility, making it possible for exposure to a variety of clinical problems in both ambulatory and inpatient settings. In addition to medical patients, exposure to patients on other services in a consultative capacity occurs during several rotations. We have active inpatient bone marrow, nephrology, and medical oncology services. Research opportunities are available, and a well-defined residency research program has been developed.
The School of Medicine has all of the traditional basic sciences and clinical departments. We have very active residency programs in all clinical disciplines. State-of-the-art facilities for both inpatient and ambulatory care are included in the Health Sciences Center complex in very scenic surroundings. The faculty are very committed to educational programs. There is excellent interaction among house staff members, faculty, and students. In addition, the Resident Organization is responsible for providing an excellent support system.
Morgantown is a picturesque, small college town at the foot of the Appalachians. Its economy is vibrant and growing. Though the single biggest employer in the area is the University, the Centers for Disease Control, WVU Medicine and other manufacturing companies also have large installations here. Bike and walking trails, fishing, cross county and downhill skiing, and camping facilities are all nearby. The University has a wonderful cultural program with dance, music and all the other arts. Mountaineer football and basketball will keep everyone excited!
