Surgical Intensive Care Unit

LOCATION: Charleston Area Medical Center / General Hospital, Charleston, West Virginia
PRECEPTOR: Dr. John Deluca and Department Surgery faculty.
DURATION: 2 or 4 weeks

STATUS: This rotation fulfills a senior year requirement for Critical Care.

Objectives

An acting internship that will enable the student to obtain and evaluate knowledge in the field of critical care and fulfill half of the one-month requirement for a critical care rotation in the fourth year.

Methods to Achieve Objectives

Daily guided, direct participation in all aspects of critical care including measurement of ventilatory and circulatory parameters, ventilator use and management, insertion of hemodynamic catheters, use of vasoactive drugs, and nutrition in critically ill patients.

Examination Procedures and Evaluation Criteria

Daily observation, and assigned presentation.

Pre-Rotation Instructions

WVU Students/Visiting Students: 4th year coordinator will email students one week prior with assignment of team and time to report.  Visiting students will first attend an Orientation before starting; you will receive an email one week prior with detailed Orientation information.
