Description

Student will function as a primary caretaker, with supervision. Team leadership will be demonstrated, as well as acute psychiatry management using evidence based techniques.

Objectives

The students will learn to:

  1. Understand acute psychiatric and medical management techniques of a psychiatry inpatient unit.
  2. Become familiar with the various therapies involved in a multidisciplinary approach.
  3. Become familiar with both the chronically mentally ill and more acutely ill patient populations.

Methods to Achieve Objectives

The student will participate in a team approach to assess, evaluate and develop plans of treatment. The student will learn collaborative skills in a team setting to work with new patients, prescribe treatments and develop discharge planning. Students will be responsible for appropriate documentation in the form of progress notes and participate in treatment team meetings and therapy sessions.
