Objectives

The Family Medicine elective will provide experience in the primary care of patients of all ages with emphasis given to continuity and comprehensiveness. This clerkship will emphasize methods of health maintenance and disease prevention. The proper clinical environment will be provided to enable the student to synthesize knowledge obtained in other disciplines and apply it in the outpatient management of common and complex medical problems. An important aspect of this clerkship deals with the patient as a member of a social system: the family. Therefore, emphasis will be given to family dynamics in health and disease.

The student will evaluate, by means of a complete history and physical examination, patients registered at the Family Practice Center under the direct supervision of a faculty attending physician. The student will present all patients to the faculty preceptor, who will discuss diagnosis and treatment on a one to one basis. The student will be expected to attend all departmental teaching activities, such as medical conferences, grand rounds, journal club and the Behavioral Family Practice seminars.
