Research

The Department of Neurology participates in many clinical research studies. Our most recent clinical trials involve Parkinson's Disease, Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis and Cerebrovascular Disease/Stroke.

Researchers:

Cathrin M. Bütefisch, M.D., investigates post-stroke mechanisms underlying the recovery of motor function, the mechanisms and modulation of use-dependent plasticity, and motor-cortex physiology involved in different movement disorders, such as distonia. In 2007, she was awarded an R01 grant from the National Center for Rehabilitation Research (NIH) for a four-year study, entitled "Neurobiological Principles Applied to the Rehabilitation of Stroke Patients."

Current Research Trials:

A Multicenter, Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo Controlled Parallel group Trial to Investigate the Efficacy and Safety of SPM927 as Adjunctive Therapy in subjects with Partial Seizures with or without Secondary Generalization. Sponsor: Schwarz Biosciences, Inc. PI: Adriana Palade, MD

A 24-month, Double-Blind, Randomized, Multicenter, placebo-controlled, parallel-group stud comparing the efficacy adn safety of 0.5 mg and 1.25 mg fingolimod (FTY720) administered orally once daily versus placebo in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. Sponsor: Novartis. PI: Gauri V. Pawar, MD

A Two year, Open Label, Randomized, Parallel Group, Blinded Assessment Ophthalmological Safety Study of Pramipexole IR vs. Ropinole in Early Parkinson's Disease Patients. Sponsor: Boehringer Ingelheim. PI: Ludwig Gutmann, MD
