Ramadan named chair of Otolaryngology

Hassan H. Ramadan, M.D., M.Sc., has been named professor and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at the West Virginia University School of Medicine, according to Clay Marsh, M.D., vice president and executive dean of health sciences. Dr. Ramadan currently serves as professor, program director and vice chair of the Department of Otolaryngology.

“Dr. Ramadan has earned the trust of thousands of patients and the admiration and the respect of his peers here at WVU and across the country for the excellent care he provides and for his advancements in research and clinical practice,” said Dr. Marsh. “Our Otolaryngology Department is a point of pride for the School of Medicine and for WVU, and he is the ideal physician to provide this group with leadership going forward.” 

Ramadan earned his medical degree and completed his residency training at the American University of Beirut Medical School and Center. He completed fellowships in otolaryngology with Harvard Medical School at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in 1987 and in head and neck surgery and pediatrics with Cornell Medical College at Lenox Hill Hospital in 1990. He is board certified in otolaryngology by the American Board of Otolaryngology and joined the School of Medicine in 1991 as an assistant professor.

“I am honored, and I look forward to the opportunity to lead the department, not only to continue to be the pride of the School of Medicine and WVU, but also to become a top department nationally,” Ramadan, said.

Ramadan specializes in pediatric otolaryngology, which includes ear, nose and throat diseases in children and in nasal and sinus diseases. He has extensive experience in endoscopic sinus surgery, and his research interests include rhinology, sinusitis and balloon sinuplasty. He holds memberships in several regional, national and international medical societies and has presented talks at many national and international meetings. He has more than 100 publications in referred medical journals. In 2010, he was honored with a Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS).

Ramadan will fill the post currently held by Stephen Wetmore, M.D., M.B.A., who recently announced that he will step down as department chair.
