WVU trauma surgeon to speak at 2014 December Commencement

West Virginia University trauma surgeon will address the University’s August and December graduates during a commencement ceremony Dec. 19.

Dr. Jennifer Knight, associate professor of surgery and associate trauma director for theJon Michael Moore Trauma Center, will charge WVU’s newest graduates with a call for success in their post-college lives.

The ceremony begins at 1:30 p.m. inside the WVU Coliseum.

According to the Office of the University Registrar, 1,714 December graduates are eligible to participate, in addition to 1,056 August graduates.

The ceremony will begin with welcoming remarks from President Gordon Gee.

Students planning to participate must register at http://graduation.wvu.edu/convocationby Friday (Dec. 12).

Dr. Knight is a graduate of the WVU School of Medicine. As a trauma surgeon, Knight cares for injured and critically ill patients and teachers surgery to residents and medical students.

She is recognized nationally as a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons, and holds leadership positions in the Association of Women in Surgery and the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma. She is credited for authoring the EAST Oriens Award, a nationally known prize that encourages young doctors to pursue a career in trauma surgery.

At WVU, Knight is part of the Women’s Leadership Initiative and has served on Faculty Senate. A West Virginia native, she was selected in 2012 as a “Great Teacher” in West Virginia.

Graduates participating in Commencement are required to wear caps and gowns, which may be purchased from the WVU Bookstore. Latin honor cords are distributed by the schools and colleges prior to the ceremony.

The University reminds graduates that participation in Commencement exercises does not guarantee the completion of a WVU degree. Diplomas will be mailed after all grades are finalized and certified by WVU’s Office of the University Registrar.
