Midwifery

The West Virginia University Midwives are devoted to providing quality health care to women throughout their life. We provide guidance in developing healthy lifestyles for the teenager, women of childbearing age and beyond. We promote the practice of individualizing care that is guided by evidenced -based practices.

Nurse Midwives are probably best known for providing prenatal care and support during childbirth. We assist patients in developing individualized birth plans and in making decisions about pain management during labor. Midwives at WVU are also trained to identify unanticipated emergency situations during childbirth that may require the assistance of an Obstetrician. The University Midwife group has direct and continuous access with the WVU General and High Risk Pregnancy Obstetricians.

The University Midwives are also skilled providers of primary gynecologic care. We perform complete health histories and physicals, including referrals for laboratory testing and mammography. Preventative medicine and health maintenance are a priority of the WVU midwife service. Additionally, educating our patients regarding options for birth control and prescribing medications are all within our scope of practice, including the placement of IUDs or Subdermal birth control devices. Preconception and fertility counseling are also services offered by WVU midwives. The University Midwife group has direct and continuous access with the WVU General and Tertiary Care Gynecologists if serious Gynecologic problems arise.

All of the midwives at WVU are registered nurses who have successfully completed an accredited midwife graduate education program, and have passed a national certification exam that is administered by the ACNM, (American College of Nurse Midwives).
