CRM Faculty and Staff

The WVU is fortunate to have a staff that has been involved in reproductive medicine since the time that Reproductive Endocrinology was recognized as a sub-specialty and has been involved in Assisted Reproductive Technologies since their inception. We also have included individuals with a wide variety of backgrounds and certifications. Our staff is comprised of physicians who are Board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as Reproductive Endocrinology, a laboratory director who holds a Ph.D., a Certified Nurse Practitioner, a laboratory technician, an R.N. nurse coordinator, a counselor, an LPN, medical assistants, a financial counselor and patient service representatives.

Vicki Blaney, LPN

LPN - Center for Reproductive Medicine
Vicki Blaney received her LPN degree from the Mon County Vo-Tech Institute. She joined the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology at WVU in 1992.

Elizabeth Cohen, MSW

Social Worker
Elizabeth Cohen received her Masters in Social Work from Howard University in Washington, D.C. She has previously worked at the Alexandria Community Mental Health Center in Alexandria, Virginia; at the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and has been a member of the WVU Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 1994. She is certified as an Independent Clinical Social Worker and is a certified mediator. She will be available at the WVUCRM for individual or couple counseling.

Melanie Clemmer, PhD

Associate IVF Director
Melanie Clemmer received her undergraduate degree in Aminal Sciences from the University of Missouri - Columbia, and a Master's degree and PhD in Reproductive Physiology from West Virginia Universtiy. She had post graduate training as an NIH Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh looking at the effects of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) on prentral follicles in non-human primates. Dr. Clemmer's research interests are spontaneous loss of pregnancy, understanding how age influences fertility, and determing factors that influence oocyte health in women.

Fran Forbes, RN-OGNP

Nurse Practitioner
"Fran" Forbes is a native of West Virginia who received her Nursing degree at the Charleston Area Medical Center and her Bachelor’s degree in Business and Nursing from the University of Mississippi. She became a Certified Nurse Practitioner at the University of Mississippi hospitals in Jackson, Mississippi. She returned to WVU in 1978 as the Director of an Adolescent Family Planning program. She subsequently joined the division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and received a sub-specialty certification in Reproductive Endocrinology. In addition to her departmental clinical responsibilities, she provides Gynecologic care in the Student Health Service, and teaches the Gynecologic portion of the Physical diagnosis course for all medical students at WVU. She has been instrumental in the establishment and continuation of the highly successful Public Health Nurses Physical Assessment Training program for breast and cervical cancer screening throughout the state of West Virginia.

Karen Merryman, RN

IVF Nurse Manager
Karen Merryman is the IVF Nurse Manager. She received her nursing degree from the Uniontown Hospital School of Nursing and Penn State University. She previously served as the Clinical Director of Abby Home Health Care for 13 years and has served as a nurse manager in Gyn offices in Uniontown and Morgantown. In addition to her administrative experience, she has served as a Gyn operating room assistant.She has coordinated the IVF program for the University since it opened in 2002. Karen has completed multiple fertility courses with special interest in IVF.She has also served as a nurse coordinator in research for West Virginia University.

Shon Rowan, MD

Assistant Professor
Dr. Rowan received his medical degree from West Virginia University in 2004. He began a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at West Virginia University after recieving his medical degree. Dr. Rowan graduated as the "outstanding resident of the year" in 2007 and 2008. He is Board Eligible in Obstetrics and Gynecology and plans to take his boards this year. He will serve as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for the West Virginia University School of Medicine.

Roger Toffle, MD

Professor
Dr. Toffle received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota. In 1975, Dr. Toffle began a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Naval Regional Medical Center, San Diego, California. Upon completion of his active duty service obligation, he went on to do a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1982. He is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He serves as a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for the West Virginia University School of Medicine. He joined the OB-GYN faculty at WVU in 1984 and re-established the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. In addition to his educational responsibilities, he has performed clinical research as well as basic research with the WVU Department of Exercise Physiology.

Michael Vernon, PhD, HCLD

Professor/Chair
Dr. Vernon received an undergraduate degree in Vertebrate Physiology from the University of Kentucky, a Masters degree in Reproductive Physiology from Eastern Kentucky, a Ph. D in Reproductive Endocrinology from the University of Florida, and did Post Graduate Training at the Primate Research Center in Madison Wisconsin. He is certified by the American Board of Bioanalysis and is also certified as a High Complexity Laboratory Director and serves as a CAP inspector. He has been involved in performing IVF at the University of Kentucky and in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He has published extensively, has lectured around the world on endometriosis and IVF, has served on NIH committees, and continues to do research on endometriosis.

Amanda Wrachford

Financial Counselor
Amanda Wrachford transferred from the Physicians Office Center at WVU where she served as the Patient Service Representative for the Reproductive Endocrinology clinic.

Donald M. Zeh, BS, MT

Medical Technologist
Certified Histocompatability Technologist

Donald Zeh is a Registered Medical Technologist and certified Histocompatability Technologist who received his degree in Medical Technology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. His work in reproductive medicine began with the Xytex Corporation cryobank in Augusta Georgia. He became involved with IVF in 1986 and has experience in IVF laboratories in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; the Charleston Area Medical Center; the Reproductive Medical Laboratory of Northern Virginia; and the Humana Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
