Cardiologist Stanley Schmidt celebrates retirement at the end of June after 40 years of service at WVU Medicine

Stanley Schmidt, MD, a cardiologist at the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI) in Morgantown, is retiring at the end of June after 40 years of service at WVU Medicine.

Dr. Schmidt’s family, including Eileen, his wife of 41 years; his children, Katherine and Adrienne; and family, friends, and colleagues gathered for a surprise celebration at the WVU Erickson Alumni Center on June 1. Speakers included David Schwartzman, MD, section chief, Cardiac Electrophysiology; John Lobban, MD; WVU President E. Gordon Gee; and George Sokos, DO, FACC, chair of Cardiology (via a video message).

Dr. Schmidt was presented with a statue commemorating his dedicated service to the citizens of West Virginia, to his many students, and to the University.

During their remarks, Gordon, who has known Dr. Schmidt for many years, mused that it will be fun to now compare retirement notes. Dr. Lobban thanked Dr. Schmidt for his mentoring, and Dr. Schwartzman observed that Dr. Schmidt had single-handedly built an entire sub-discipline of cardiology, known as cardiac electrophysiology, at WVU and had trained many cardiologists who have gone on to productive careers of their own.

Dr. Schmidt, your commitment has been nothing short of exceptional. And your expertise and experience have been invaluable. Congratulations – and here’s to an enjoyable (and relaxing) retirement!

Below are several photos from the retirement celebration.
