Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences welcomes newly-matched residents for 2026

The West Virginia University Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences will welcome five newly matched residents to the residency program in July.

The Ophthalmology Residency Program’s Class of 2030 includes three in-state graduates and two additional graduates from other institutions.

The program welcomes incoming residents Nicholas Coker from Marshall University, Jacob King from West Virginia University, Karen Matar from Lebanese American University, Debby Song from Augusta University, and Wendy Tan from West Virginia University.

The five new residents will arrive on campus in July, initially starting as hospital interns through the joint transitional year program, before transitioning to full-time residents in ophthalmology for the next three years of their training.

“I am excited to welcome yet another talented class of incoming residents to our program and to the Eye Institute family,” said Bradley Thuro, M.D., program director. “I look forward to working closely with each of them over the next four years as they hone their ophthalmic skills and aid us in our goal of further addressing visual disparity in West Virginia and the surrounding region.”
