Hoffmann named vice president of clinical integration for the WVU Health System

The senior executive leadership of WVU Medicine announced today (Feb. 17) the appointment of Stephen Hoffmann, MD, as vice president of clinical integration for the West Virginia University Health System.

Dr. Hoffmann, a professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine, joined WVU Medicine in October 2015, and currently serves as both the vice president of medical affairs for WVU Hospitals and associate dean for clinical programs at the WVU School of Medicine. He will continue to serve in those two leadership roles as he takes on this more expansive role with the health system. His focus will be on aligning and standardizing clinical care across the entire system, and identifying, evaluating, and facilitating opportunities to do so with the health system’s 11 hospitals and their associated clinics.

“Steve is a talented physician and a great utility player – he’s someone who can jump in and help solve complex issues and challenges that we face as a health system,” Albert L. Wright, Jr., president and CEO of the WVU Health System, said “His practical approach to managing and solving issues and his ‘get-the-job done’ thinking will be critical as we continue to build a highly integrated network of hospitals and clinics across West Virginia and the broader region.”

As part of his expanded role, Hoffmann will, among other things, oversee and direct the health system’s existing affinity groups with an eye toward ensuring they continue to develop strategies and tactics that further align and integrate the WVU Medicine network clinically.

“We deeply appreciate Steve’s willingness to take on this new senior leadership role in our health system, and look forward to having him apply his deep thinking and great intellect to a whole new set of issues and challenges,” Clay Marsh, MD, vice president and executive dean for health sciences, said. “Steve’s sharp intellect is matched only by his sharp wit, and both Albert and I have benefited – many times – from his great insights, counsel, and ability to manage directly, or help manage, very challenging and complex issues. He is a master at working behind-the-scenes to help move initiatives and issues forward.”

Hoffmann previously served at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He is board certified in both critical care and pulmonary medicine.
