West Virginia pharmacists invited to apply for scholarship to complete WVU School of Dentistry’s Certified Tobacco Treatment Training Program

With funding support from West Virginia University’s Community Engagement Grant, the West Virginia University School of Dentistry is offering eight scholarships for pharmacists to complete its Certified Tobacco Treatment Training Program (CTTTP).

To be eligible for scholarship support, which covers the online training program’s $750 registration fee, applicants must be a pharmacist working in West Virginia. The application process includes submission of a brief personal statement (< 200 words) including interest in completing tobacco treatment specialist certification and plans for providing tobacco cessation services within the workplace, institution or community. The statement should also include the county in which the applicant works, an acknowledgement that the training program is offered online and a commitment to completing the training in its entirety.

One of 28 organizations worldwide accredited by the Council of Tobacco Treatment Training Programs, the WVU School of Dentistry program aims to train healthcare providers to treat tobacco use disorder and vaping cessation with evidence-based strategies. West Virginia has one of the highest rates of adult and teen tobacco usage in the country.

The Certified Tobacco Treatment Training Program is an online, self-paced course for professionals in the fields of education, dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health and social work. Tobacco Treatment Specialists work in a variety of settings including hospitals, community health centers, medical and dental practices, educational settings, social service agencies, treatment centers, quit lines and mental health centers. In addition to providing treatment, specialists educate others about tobacco dependence treatments.

Participation in the training program includes navigating through four online learning modules which offer activities and self-test exams to reinforce knowledge, confidence, and skills regarding evidence-based tobacco cessation strategies. A tobacco treatment specialist certificate may be attained after confirmation of course completion with a successful score (≥80%) on the Tobacco Treatment Specialist Certification examination and proclamation of a tobacco-free lifestyle.
