WVU nursing students to host bone marrow drive

As a part of Interprofessional Education Week (IPE), the WVU School of Nursing Student Nurses Association (SNA) in Morgantown is hosting a bone marrow drive Wednesday, March 20. Registration takes less than five minutes and only involves swabbing a cheek. Testing will take place from noon to 5 p.m. at the Mountainlair, during the IPE fair at the HSC Pylons, and at the Rec Center on the Evansdale campus.

Why is bone marrow testing important?

• 6 out of 10 people with a blood disorder do not have a match
• The majority of those who need a bone marrow transplant is less than 4 years old
• Males ages 18-30 have the best chance of being a match for someone
• 1% of people in the registry are called to donate but most are only asked to donate blood products such as stem cells.
