High-achieving high school students can begin their journey to a PharmD degree even earlier through a new Accelerated Direct Admit Pathway (DAP) at the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy.

Based on the success of previously enrolled pilot students, the accelerated program allows those who meet the designated requirements to complete prerequisite coursework in as few as two to three college semesters and apply to the School of Pharmacy during the spring semester of their freshman year.

To be considered for the program, students must have at least a 3.5 high school GPA and complete college-level chemistry and calculus coursework while in high school. Remaining prerequisite coursework includes organic chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, statistics, microbiology and general education foundations. Summer coursework may be used to help balance the academic load.

“The Accelerated Direct Admit Pathway creates an opportunity for motivated students to move efficiently toward their goal of becoming a pharmacist while receiving direct guidance and mentorship from the School of Pharmacy,” said Dr. Ashleigh Barrickman, associate dean of admissions and student affairs. “By strengthening early connections and providing a clear academic plan, we are helping students build confidence and momentum toward matriculation.”

Benefits for participating students include advising from School of Pharmacy faculty and the director of advising, as well as pharmacy-focused coursework designed to support the application and interview process.

The School of Pharmacy will continue to offer the traditional DAP program, which allows students to complete prerequisite coursework in two years of undergraduate study, along with a new extended DAP program. These options allow students to select a pathway that aligns with their academic preparation and timeline. All DAP students will also have access to student success coaching to support strong study skills, along with guidance from School of Pharmacy advisors and faculty to ensure successful completion of prerequisite coursework prior to matriculation. Students admitted through the Direct Admit Pathway will also qualify for WVU’s Climb Higher Scholarship based on GPA and test scores, with additional merit-based scholarship opportunities available during their time in the School of Pharmacy.

Applications for the Accelerated Direct Admit Pathway are now being accepted for the fall 2027 cohort.
