The Comprehensive Opioid Addiction Treatment (COAT) program's model is centered around the following:
- Patients benefit from medical and group therapy treatment
- Medical and therapy groups are both effective and efficient treatment modalities
- Medical and group therapy visits should be tied together
- Provide as much structure as possible being mindful of cost/reimbursement
- Require attendance at 12-step programs and/or community support groups
- Primary goals: abstinence from all intoxicating substances, improved quality of life and extension of life
