Sports Medicine Fellowship

The WVU Department of Emergency Medicine received ACGME approval for a Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship in early 2019. While the fellowship is housed in the WVU Department of Emergency Medicine, we accept graduates of accredited residencies in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics.

This one-year program begins each year on July 1 and is approved for two fellows per year.

The fellowship will provide training in non-operative Orthopedics, general medical care of athletes, concussion management, and other sports-related topics in addition to the required time in your primary specialty.

Clinic time will be augmented by time spent in the athletic training room seeing high school and college athletes and by a variety of game and event coverage.  The fellows will receive training in ultrasound use both in the clinic and on the sideline.

There are currently four Primary Care Sports Medicine boarded physicians who will serve as faculty along with other specialists to provide a broad training in Sports Medicine.  Other specialists include Ortho Sports, Ortho Hand, Ortho Foot/Ankle, Cardiology, Physical Therapy, etc.

Dr. A.J. Monseau serves as the Fellowship Director. Dr. Monseau is board certified in Emergency Medicine and Sports Medicine and is a Professor at WVU.  In addition to continuing to practice Emergency Medicine, he is the Head Team Physician and Medical Director for the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.  He has served as a moderator, a research panelist, and a speaker at the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) annual meetings and as a speaker for the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM).  He is currently the Chair of the ACEP Sports Medicine Section.
