The Internal Medicine Global Health Guatemala rotation is based out of San Lucas Tolimán on Lake Atitlán and incorporates rural health care in the surrounding 19 fincas as well as teaching opportunities. The resident spends time providing hands on care, ranging from acute infectious diseases to chronic lifelong conditions such as diabetes, in mobile clinics that are set up each day. They keep track of all patients seen so that data can be reviewed and common themes can be identified to direct them on the most important health issues in the communities. Each year the resident will lead an educational seminar for the community healthcare workers working in the resource limited setting. The four week rotation is joined by fourth year medical students giving the resident the opportunity to continue mentoring while abroad. We partner with the San Lucas Mission and Friends of San Lucas, a prominent organization improving the welfare of the people in San Lucas and the surrounding areas.
