Research Interests

My primary research interests are in the study of human memory, episodic and working memory. Structural (MRI Volumetrics and Diffusion Tensor Imaging) and functional neuroimaging (PET activation and fMRI) are used to study both normal and clinical populations with a particular focus on the effects of age and of toxins on human memory, brain structure, and function.

Age-related Changes in Brain Structure and Function

We are using MRI techniques (fMRI, Volumetrics and Diffusion Tensor Imaging) to study how the brain changes with age as a function of intelligence and cognitive reserve.

Structural and Functional Changes to the Brain After Toxic Exposure

We are completing an R01 in collaboration with Dr. Lisa Morrow at the University of Pittsburgh where we used MRI Volumetrics, PET activation, and Neuropsychological Testing to study the effects of long-term exposure to solvents on brain structure and function.

In collaboration with Dr. Jame Abraham we are also studying the effects of chemotherapy for breast cancer on brain white matter.

Brain Structure and Function Related to Memory Processes

We have ongoing studies to examine the brain structures involved with memory in healthy individuals as well as patients with epilepsy.
