Joint Commission certifies WVU Healthcare hip and knee replacement programs

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Center for Joint Replacement at WVU Healthcare has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for its hip and knee programs.

To receive this accreditation, the clinic underwent a rigorous onsite review last month. The visit allowed a Joint Commission expert to evaluate WVU Healthcare’s hip and knee replacement programs for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients and families, including infection prevention and control, leadership, and medication management.

“The Joint Commission accreditation process displays an overwhelming commitment by the Center for Joint Replacement at WVU Healthcare to not only provide the highest level of care to our patients but also to compare ourselves to the highest standards of care in the nation,” Brock Lindsey, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon and assistant professor in the WVU School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedics, said.

The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification Program is designed to evaluate clinical programs across three core areas: compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities.

“The work of our Center for Joint Replacement providers and staff improves our patients’ mobility in a transformative way,” added Albert Wright, WVU Healthcare president and chief executive officer. “Joint Commission accreditation essentially provides us a framework to ensure high quality care from the top down.”

In addition to Dr. Lindsey, The Center for Joint Replacement’s skilled team of orthopaedic surgeons includes Matthew Dietz, M.D., Benjamin Frye, M.D., Adam Klein, M.D., Barry McDonough, M.D., and David Waxman, M.D.

Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission seeks to continuously improve healthcare for the public by evaluating healthcare organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value. An independent, not-for-profit organization, The Joint Commission is the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in healthcare.
