Ophthalmology for the Generalist

LOCATION: Ruby Memorial Hospital and WVU Eye Institute, Morgantown, WV

Objectives

Students will acquire knowledge and skills in the following areas: Basic Eye Examination, The Aging Eye, Systematic Disease and the Eye, Childhood Eye Problems, Acute Nontraumatic Visual Loss, Ocular Trauma and Emergencies, Ocular Symptoms with Neurologic Implications, Ocular Pharmacology, and The Red Eye. Emphasis is placed on acquiring skills and knowledge needed for the individual entering the primary care field.

Methods to Achieve Objectives

Learning is accomplished in three settings:

  1. self-directed study through the use of assigned videotapes, interactive CD ROM's, and slide/script presentations in The Trotter Library located in the Eye Institute;
  2. observation in the operating room;
  3. participation in patient care activities in the Eye Institute.

Examination Procedures and Evaluation Criteria

A brief quiz is administered at the end of the rotation to assure completion of the assigned self directed study. Students will also be evaluated based on attendance, judgment, attitude, and technical competence.
