Surgical Pathology Fellowship

Goals & Opportunities

The goal of this one-year program is to provide additional training in general surgical pathology, with the objective to prepare the fellow for independent sign out in either a community or an academic setting. Graduated responsibilities are assigned based on performance and prior experiences, and at the end of the fellowship, the fellow is expected to function at the level of a junior faculty.

The program offers ample resources for the fellow to become competent in providing histopathologic diagnoses, intraoperative consultations and gross evaluations, in using ancillary studies, and in developing skills for successful laboratory management/directorship. The department of pathology encourages the development of scholarly activities under appropriate faculty mentorship, and presentation at national meetings.

Fellowship Structure

The program is tailored to fulfill the fellow’s specific needs, interests and career goals. The required rotations provide training in General Surgical Pathology, Consult, and Frozen Section, with exposure to an extensive variety of specimen types and subspecialties. Interested fellows may spend additional elective time on selected areas, namely, Dermatopathology, Cytology, Neuropathology, Breast Pathology, GYN pathology, GI Pathology, Head & Neck pathology, Eye Pathology, Autopsy, Lung Pathology, Hematopathology, Research/Lab Management and others. 

Fellows have the opportunity to participate in multidisciplinary conferences (tumor board), unknown slide conferences, laboratory management and career development seminars, and didactic conferences. Teaching opportunities include one-on-one review of slides with junior residents, and presentation of selected resident conferences.

Research and teaching activities are offered to interested fellows. Fellows are encouraged to identify a faculty mentor in the first few months of training, who will guide fellows to successfully reach academic/service expectations and individual career goals.

Requirements

Applicant must be Board eligible in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and must obtain a West Virginia state license before admission into the program.

Commensurate with level of training.
