Clay's Purpose — September 2022

A monthly letter from Clay Marsh, Chancellor and Executive Dean, WVU Health Sciences

Purpose is a powerful word. Understanding our sense of purpose often starts with asking “why?”

Learning about our purpose is a journey. Exploring new perspectives and engaging with others propels us to try new things, to become more than we thought we could be.

Purpose is deeper than a mindset – it taps into our core motivation for engagement and choosing a path. It helps us to understand “why” we want to do something and how it aligns with our values, unique talents, strengths and things we care about.

WVU is kicking off the inaugural Week of Purpose beginning September 18. This week is designed to deliver inspiring speakers, showcase University resources, offer diverse perspectives and introduce student success tools.

Take this opportunity for self-exploration, learn about new ideas and connect with others as we begin this purposeful journey together.

Join me for an honest and engaging workshop on finding your “why,” based on Simon Sinek’s “Start with Why.” I will share my key principles of purpose: embrace purpose with practice, reflect on the journey and where you want to go next, invest in health and self and more.

This workshop will be offered on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from noon – 1 p.m. at Evansdale Crossing’s Media Innovation Center on the 4th floor. A virtual option will also be available.

WVU’s Purpose Center, a place of exploration and connection, will help students discover their interests and strengths to create a personalized, educational experience that leads to student success and a lifelong pursuit of passion.

Let’s go forward together with purpose.
