Coombs to retire following dedicated service to the WVU School of Dentistry
After nearly a decade of serving the West Virginia University School of Dentistry, Karen Coombs has announced her retirement from her role as director of development, effective Feb. 7.
Coombs joined the WVU Foundation in 2016 and has worked with the school for the entirety of her tenure.
“The School of Dentistry has been incredibly fortunate to work with Karen over the past eight years,” Dr. Stephen Pachuta, dean, said. “Karen has been a driving force in fostering relationships with our alumni and many friends of the School of Dentistry that help contribute to the success of our students, faculty and staff and enable us to fulfill our land-grant mission. On a personal note, Karen has been a wonderful mentor and friend to me over the last four years; she has taught me much and will be missed. Please join me in wishing her all the best in retirement.”
Throughout her time at WVU, Coombs worked closely with alumni, faculty, friends and other supporters to meet the school’s strategic priorities through major gifts, providing opportunities for student scholarships, facility improvements, technology advancements and more. Her dedication and commitment to improving oral health in West Virginia resulted in multiple successful campaigns, including the State of Minds campaign and the multi-phase Transforming Oral Health: The Campaign for Facilities, among other accomplishments.
“I am incredibly proud to have been part of the facility renovations at the School of the Dentistry and am excited for the next phase,” Coombs said. “From the Locker Project to the Urgent Care and outpatient reception area and clinic naming challenges, having the opportunity to work closely with such passionate alumni has been inspiring.”
Coombs was also instrumental in the creation of the Pylons Alliance Leadership Society (PALS) to recognize and show appreciation for loyal financial supports and the establishment of the LEDRS Scholarship to award students for their efforts in Leadership, Ethics, Dignity, Respect and Service.
In addition to serving WVU, Coombs worked with other medical and academic organizations in the region during her career. She is a graduate of West Virginia University, earning a Master of Business Administration, and she completed her undergraduate education at Slippery Rock University. She also earned certification to become a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Dee O’Palko, who has been a member of the WVU Foundation for more than 20 years, assumed the role of director of development following the start of the near year.
“I have been incredibly blessed to have worked with such passionate and dedicated people who support their alma mater,” Coombs said. “I have forged relationships that I value and made friends that will transcend the workspace. I ask you to support Dee O’Palko the way you supported me. She is here to continue the good works on behalf of your school! I will miss you. I appreciate the opportunity to have worked with you and to have served the School of Dentistry.”
Individuals and organizations interested in supporting the WVU School of Dentistry can contact O’Palko at 304-413-5049 or dopalko@wvuf.org to discuss giving opportunities.
