Dr. Michael Edmond named CMO for WVU Health System
The West Virginia University Health System and the West Virginia University School of Medicine’s affiliated practice plan, University Health Associates, announced the appointment of Michael B. Edmond, MD, MPH, MPA, MBA., as the WVU Health System’s new chief medical officer, the chief executive of University Health Associates, and the vice dean for clinical affairs and chief medical officer of WVU Hospitals. Dr. Edmond will join WVU Medicine in November.
Edmond, who grew up in Marion County and graduated summa cum laude from Fairmont State College with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, earned his medical degree from the WVU School of Medicine in 1986. He subsequently earned advanced degrees in public health, public administration, and business administration from the University of Pittsburgh, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), and the University of Iowa. His postdoctoral training includes fellowships in hospital and clinical epidemiology, as well as infectious diseases, at the University of Iowa and the University of Pittsburgh. Both his internship and residency in Internal Medicine were at WVU.

During a distinguished career in medicine that spans three decades, Edmond has held numerous academic and clinical leadership posts. He now serves as the chief quality officer, associate chief medical officer, and clinical professor of internal medicine – infectious diseases at the University of Iowa Health Care. Earlier in his career, he served as chair of infectious diseases at VCU.

Marsh, MD, vice president and executive dean for WVU Health Sciences, said. “Michael has left an indelible mark on the practice of medicine. We will benefit greatly from his outstanding leadership and wisdom.”
Many national and regional organizations and societies have recognized his strong leadership and significant contributions to medicine, and in 2016, he received the WVU School of Medicine’s Outstanding Alumnus Award for his scholarly achievement, humanitarian contribution, and outstanding service.
