Eastern Campus welcomes new simulations specialist Charles Morris

Charles Morris, MREM, AAS, BSN, joined the West Virginia University School of Medicine Eastern Campus as a simulations specialist for the Birthing Simulation Lab located at the Health Sciences Center Eastern Division in Martinsburg, West Virginia in November.

Morris sees the opportunity as a good way to combine his nursing and equipment skills, while also allowing him to help teach and mentor students.

“Working in the Birthing Simulation Lab gives me the unique opportunity to work hands-on with students in an environment they likely haven’t had the chance to work in before,” Morris explained. “It is rewarding for me to be able to play a key role in building a program that will provide our students with valuable learning experiences.”

A Shepherdstown, West Virginia native, Morris is a retired U.S. Air Force veteran who served from 1987 to 2015. During his time in the military, Morris worked primarily as a cavalry scout, a general nurse and a flight nurse. From 2015 to 2022, he worked as a medical subject headings indexer for the National Institutes of Health, where he performed natural language processing work on medical research articles.

Morris has received a number of degrees and certifications from various universities, including certification in Level III Test and Evaluation Engineering from Defense Acquisitions University in 2013. He also received a post-Bachelor’s Certificate in Nursing Faculty and Education from Drexel University in 2012. He earned his Master of Emergency Management degree from Touro University in 2008. In 1996, he also earned his Associate of Applied Science degree from the Community College of the Air Force and his Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Shepherd University.

During his free time, Morris enjoys restoring vehicles. He said he is currently working on restoring a 1981 and 1983 Jeep CJ8 Scrambler.
