OB Morbidity & Mortality “Ethical Considerations in the Setting of Obstetric Complications” – January 19, 2023 @ 530-8p. Location-HSC Health Science Center & Microsoft Teams. Speakers: Erin Miller D.O., Maninder Sohi MSIII, Ellen Kruse MSIII. Objectives: 1.Overview of Ethical Principles. 2.Discussion of patient autonomy in the setting of pregnancy and delivery. 3.Discussion of operative vaginal birth options, specifically vacuum-assisted vaginal delivery indications and complications.

Surgical Case Conference “Blunt Abdominal Trauma” – January 20, 2023 @ 730a-830a. Location-BMC 8th floor classroom & Microsoft Teams. Speakers: Dr. Jason Turner, Assistant Professor, WVU Medicine Department of Surgery, Megan Lauris, MSIII and Patrick Trouten, MSIII. Objectives: 1) Review indications for emergent surgical intervention in trauma patients. 2) Review appropriate workup of trauma patients including trauma initial and secondary survey, imaging, labs and use of TEG (thromboelastography). 3) Discuss alternative non-operative management of splenic injuries. 4) Discuss stages of hemorrhagic shock and appropriate blood-based resuscitation. 5) Discuss current guidelines on post-splenectomy vaccinations. 6) Review grading of liver and splenic injuries.

Chronic Pain Self-Management Program – Wednesdays/Jan 18-Feb 22 @ 1p-330p. This evidence based program has been developed by Stanford University and is FREE and open to all. HSTA- The Health Sciences and Technology Academy’s vision was founded in 1994 on the faith, resilience, spirit and commitment of individuals, communities, and universities throughout the state. HSTA is a 9th-12th grade STEM enrichment program built in West Virginia, by West Virginians, for West Virginians which encourage aspirations, opens doors, and empowers minority and underrepresented students and communities. Sharps Injury reminder for students – Should you experience an actual, possible, or “just not sure” blood or body fluid exposure, report it immediately to OR staff in the room, go to OR Charge Nurse for assistance. You will report to the ER for immediate follow-up. Must address within 2 hrs! When registering, DO NOT GIVE INSURANCE CARD, register as “WVU Student Health Guarantor Account” so it does not get charged to your insurance.
