:::WVU FAMILY MEDICINE RURAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS:::

The WVU Department of Family Medicine is pleased to announce that the applications for its innovative Rural Scholars Program are now available. This program is designed for students committed to making rural/small town Family Medicine in West Virginia a career. Qualified MS III’s are eligible for a $10,000 stipend for their fourth year and facilitated admission to WVU’s Morgantown Family Medicine Residency. The Rural Scholars Program allows for an enhanced primary care experience in the 4th year curriculum as well as early integration into the residency experience. Chronic Pain Self-Management Program – Wednesdays/Jan 18-Feb 22 @ 1p-330p. This evidence based program has been developed by Stanford University and is FREE and open to all. Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities – As part of your graduation requirement, you must complete 100 hours of community service.  Please remember to document what you have already completed, and plan to start early on completing any additional hours needed.

HSTA- The Health Sciences and Technology Academy’s vision was founded in 1994 on the faith, resilience, spirit and commitment of individuals, communities, and universities throughout the state. HSTA is a 9th-12th grade STEM enrichment program built in West Virginia, by West Virginians, for West Virginians which encourage aspirations, opens doors, and empowers minority and underrepresented students and communities. Case Logs – Be sure that your procedure logs in E-value are updated and that all your cases have been logged to date. Remember…case log completion is a requirement for passing your third-year clerkships.

Career Counseling Meetings – Appointments will be available on Feb. 3, 10, 6, and 13 for Career Counseling meetings with the Eastern Deans to discuss your specialty of choice and your draft 4th year schedule. You can meet with either Dr. Lorenzetti or Dr. Zavala. Please coordinate with Student Services to schedule your meeting prior to Feb. 15, in case you need to make changes to your draft schedule.

4th Year Schedules – Remember your draft 4th year schedules need to be turned in to alderm@wvumedicine.org and tonya.armstrong@wvumedicine.org by Feb. 15.

Please stop by to enjoy a cup of coffee/tea or just to say Hi!  Don’t forget that your Student Lounge and Study areas here at the HSC Building are open for you to enjoy all hours with your badge access. Please enjoy the Keurig, Ping Pong, Foosball and much more.

Sharps Injury reminder for students – Should you experience an actual, possible, or “just not sure” blood or body fluid exposure, report it immediately to OR staff in the room, go to OR Charge Nurse for assistance. You will report to the ER for immediate follow-up. Must address within 2 hrs! When registering, DO NOT GIVE INSURANCE CARD, register as “WVU Student Health Guarantor Account” so it does not get charged to your insurance.
