Flanagan named chair of WVU Pathology, Anatomy and Laboratory Medicine

Melina Flanagan, M.D., MSPH, has been named chair of the West Virginia University School of Medicine Department of Pathology, Anatomy and Laboratory Medicine following a national search.

“I am both honored and excited to lead our pathology department as we provide state-of-the-art anatomic and clinical laboratory services in Morgantown and throughout West Virginia and as we cultivate our next generation of pathologists, laboratory staff and health science professionals,” Dr. Flanagan said.

Flanagan has been serving as the interim chair since January. She is a professor of pathology and has held a number of educational roles, including program director of the pathology residency program and cytopathology fellowship program.

“Dr. Flanagan is a visionary leader and poised to grow the department’s excellence in service to West Virginia, WVU Medicine and our country. The department is a benchmark of excellence across education, research and clinical care that impacts patient care and training,” Clay Marsh, M.D., WVU Health Sciences chancellor and executive dean, said.

Flanagan joined WVU in 2008 and has served on various department and Health Sciences committees.

She completed an anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where she served as chief resident, followed by fellowships in breast and gynecological pathology at Magee Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh and cytopathology at the University of Pennsylvania.

She attended Tulane University for her M.D. and Master’s programs and holds a bachelor of arts in biopsychology from Vassar College. She is a nationally recognized expert in cytopathology and pathology education.
