Geriatric, palliative medicine and hospice professors have article published in Nursing 2022

An article on providing palliative care to patients with advanced dementia written by West Virginia University Section Chief of Geriatric, Palliative Medicine and Hospice and Grace Kinney Mead Chair of Geriatrics R. Osvaldo Navia, M.D. and West Virginia University Clinical Associate Professor in the WVU School of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner at the WVU School of Nursing and WVU School of Medicine Lori Anne Constantine, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, ACHPN, was recently published in the March issue of Nursing 2022.

The article, titled “Palliative care for patients with advanced dementia” describes the stages of dementia and how nurses can take steps to provide adequate and compassionate care for patients with advanced dementia. The article also provides symptoms and effects of advanced dementia that nurses should watch for when caring for patients including mood and behavioral issues, cachexia and delirium. Finally, the article addresses the importance of advanced care planning and the costs of institutionalization and unpaid caregivers.
