WVU Medicine was represented at the Mountaineer Days event in Thomas, West Virginia, on Saturday (July 5).
Elaine Geroski, MSN, CNOR, associate vice president of Patient Services at WVU Medicine Grant Memorial Hospital, and her brother, P.S. Martin, MD, FACEP, FAEMS, professor, Emergency Medicine, and director, Division of Prehospital Medicine, WVU School of Medicine, as well as state medical director for the Office of Emergency Medical Services and interim state health officer, participated in the Mountaineer Days parade by riding in the WVU Emergency Medical Services Physician Response Program vehicle.
The program launched in the spring of 2020 in Marion and Tucker counties. It includes a physician-led team that works with existing EMS resources to provide emergency medical treatments, such as diagnostic ultrasounds, medication/video-assisted intubations, administration of blood products, procedural sedations, and life-saving field amputations, that were previously unavailable prior to arriving at hospitals. Participating physicians respond to emergencies as requested by county 911 operators and EMS agencies in a quick-response vehicle that is equipped with specialized equipment.
Rural medicine is a focus for both Elaine and Dr. Martin, as they grew up in Tucker County.
