Guidance on Illness Reporting Procedures for COVID-19

With the influx of individuals returning to campus over the next few weeks, guidance has been issued regarding what to do if students, faculty or staff feel ill or believe they may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19.

Students who are feeling ill with possible symptoms of COVID-19 are asked to contact WVU Medicine Student Health at 304-285-7200. Students on regional campuses should contact their Student Health Clinic, the local health department or the WV DHHR hotline at 1-800-887-4304.

Employees who are feeling ill with possible symptoms of COVID-19 are asked to contact their supervisor immediately.

Anyone who believes they may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 should stay at home, remain isolated from others and wear a mask at all times. Specific instructions are listed below.

Symptoms of COVID-19 may appear 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus and include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing 
  • Chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache 
  • Sore throat
  • New loss of taste or smell 
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

Students who feel sick or believe they may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 should:

  1. Stay at home, remain isolated from others and wear a mask at all times.
  2. Morgantown campus students should contact WVU Medicine Student Health at 304-285-7200. Students on regional campuses should contact their Student Health Clinic, the local health department or the WV DHHR hotline at 1-800-887-4304.
  3. Student Health staff will perform an assessment, provide advice, determine if testing is needed and complete the WVU Illness Reporting Form.
  4. If your symptoms continue to escalate, seek immediate emergency care.
  5. You may be contacted by university officials for additional information.

Faculty, Staff, Graduate Assistants, post-doctoral fellows and other employees who feel sick or believe they may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 should:

  1. Stay at home, remain isolated from others and wear a mask at all times.
  2. Contact your supervisor immediately.  Your supervisor will complete the WVU Illness Reporting Form.
  3. Contact your primary healthcare provider or call WVU Medicine at 304-598-6000 (Option 4) – let them know that you are a University employee. Your healthcare provider or those answering the WVU Medicine phone will perform an assessment, provide advice, and determine if testing is needed.
  4. If your symptoms continue to escalate, seek immediate emergency care.
  5. You may be contacted by University officials for additional information.

If you are currently awaiting COVID-19 test results, please self-isolate until results are final. If you have received a positive test result, please continue to self-isolate per CDC guidelines. Local health department authorities will be in contact with further guidance.
