Hashmi, Shaver named to assistant dean roles, effective July 1

The West Virginia University School of Medicine has named two faculty members to newly created assistant dean roles.

 “It’s an exciting time for the School as we ensure that leadership reflects all of programs and keeps the best interest of our learners, from undergraduate to fellow, at heart. We’re proud that our faculty want to step up and serve – it shows our faculty embody the Mountaineer values,” said Clay Marsh, M.D., chancellor and executive dean for Health Sciences, said.

Mahreen Hashmi, M.D., is the new assistant dean for M.D. Student Services. This role serves to help execute the key education mission on the school’s leadership team, works collaboratively with counterparts in the education mission areas Health Sciences. She is responsible for a variety of the student services functions for the M.D. degree and its combined degree programs. She will be an integral part of the career counseling efforts.

Hashmi is a professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine and has served in various leadership roles while at the School, including time as both a clerkship and residency program director. She has also served as vice chair of the M.D. degree curriculum committee.

Erica Shaver, M.D., is the assistant dean and assistant Designated Institutional Official for Graduate Medical Education. The role serves as part of the key leadership team of the education mission for the School of Medicine, and works collaboratively with counterparts in the mission. She will be a principal leader for promoting the graduate medical education mission of the School of Medicine and for achieving the vision of being a leader in graduate medical education through innovation and scholarship.

Shaver, an alumnus of the Department of Emergency Medicine residency program, is the vice chair for education and training and the residency program director for the department.

Executive Council Appointments

As a result of the School of Medicine Faculty Bylaws vote, two faculty members who were elected as WVU faculty senators were named to serve as Executive Council voting members along with all the department chairs.

Ann Murray, M.D., associate professor of neurology, and Josephine Reece, M.D., associate professor of internal medicine will serve on Executive Council.

Dr. Murray is the Department of Neurology’s student clerkship director, and the director of the WVU Comprehensive Movement Disorder Clinic.

Dr. Reece is the director of the Department of Medicine’s Global Health Track and the associate program director for the internal medicine residency program.

Both Murray and Reece earned their M.D. degrees from WVU.

Dean’s Council appointments

Under directive from the LCME, beginning July 1, three additional faculty members will be added to the school’s Dean’s Council. A representative from each of the following three areas, including a basic science department, a clinical department and professional programs were appointed by Dean Marsh to one-year terms.

Sarah Sofka, M.D., professor, vice chair of education and residency program director for Internal Medicine, will serve as the clinical faculty representative.

Ralph R. Utzman, PT, MPH, Ph.D., professor and director of clinical education for the Division of Physical Therapy will represent undergraduate and professional programs.

Karen Woodfork, Ph.D., teaching professor in the Department of Physiology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, will represent basic science departments.
