Haut named to new leadership position at Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute
Marc W. Haut, Ph.D., has been chosen to serve in a new leadership role as vice chair and director of clinical research and education for the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute. Currently the chair of West Virginia University’s Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry, Dr. Haut is also professor in the Departments of Neuroscience, Neurology and Radiology and the WVU Cancer Institute.
In his new role, Haut will be responsible for leading all clinical trials research and will manage the clinical research investigators for RNI. He also will direct population health research initiatives, act as liaison on clinical research initiatives and serve as the clinical research lead on the RNI Research Steering Committee.
“Dr. Haut has played a pivotal leadership role in setting the direction of the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry and will continue to help expand the clinical research and patient care capabilities in his new position with RNI,” Clay Marsh, M.D., vice president and executive dean of health sciences, said. “His extensive research experience in human memory and diseases of the brain make him well positioned to advance RNI’s clinical research.”
Haut earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Rhodes College in 1982, his master’s degree in clinical psychology from Murray State University in 1984 and his doctorate degree in clinical psychology from University of North Dakota in 1988. He is board certified in clinical neuropsychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology and joined the School of Medicine in 1989 as an assistant professor.
Haut’s special clinical interests include ALS, brain tumors, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, Parkinson’s disease and psychiatric disease. He is an active researcher with numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, and his current research interest is in the study of human brain plasticity using MRI. He has received numerous honors and awards related to research and teaching.
“Dr. Haut has done a great job in leading the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry for the past four years,” Ali Rezai, M.D., executive chair and vice president of neuroscience, said. “We are excited that Marc has accepted this new, important leadership role in the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute. His leadership will help advance our research efforts to improve brain health and the lives of our patients.”
James H. Berry, D.O., associate professor and vice chair in the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry and director of addiction services, will serve as interim chair of the Department. Dr. Berry is board-certified in both general psychiatry and addiction psychiatry. He received his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, completed a general psychiatry residency at West Virginia University and an addiction psychiatry fellowship at the University of Hawaii.
John V. Campo, M.D., chief behavioral wellness officer and assistant dean for behavioral health will lead the search committee.
