Incoming Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep section chief’s work published in “Sleep”

Sunil Sharma, M.D., who will join the Department of Medicine in late April, has been published in SLEEP, a journal of the Sleep Research Society.

Dr. Sharma’s findings show that positive airway pressure therapy reduces pulmonary hypertension in patients admitted for acute heart failure with pulmonary hypertension and obstructive sleep apnea.

“The relationship of pulmonary hypertension in patients with heart failure and sleep apnea is unclear,” Sharma said. “Overall, the study improves our understanding of the impact of positive airway pressure therapy for obstructive sleep apnea on pulmonary pressures in acute heart failure. If this effect is sustained it may impact the natural history of congestive heart failure with pulmonary hypertension.”

Sharma will serve as WVU’s new section chief of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep. He joins WVU from the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pa., where we served as the fellowship program director for the Einstein Healthcare Network.
