Mattocks honored with Wilks Award for excellence in simulation education
Alma Mattocks, Ph.D., ATC, CHSE, director of the West Virginia University School of Medicine Athletic Training Program, was named the 2026 recipient of the David H. Wilks Memorial Award for Excellence in Simulation.
“I am humbled and honored to be selected as the recipient of the David H. Wilks Memorial Award for Excellence in Simulation. I am incredibly grateful to the team at STEPS, whose expertise, collaboration, and support make integrating simulation into our curriculum both seamless and impactful.”
Presented by the WV STEPS David and Jo Ann Shaw Center for Simulation Training and Education Patient Safety, the award celebrates faculty who demonstrate exemplary achievement in teaching innovation, assessment, research, quality, and systems at WV STEPS.
Dr. Mattocks also serves as chairperson and an associate professor in the SOM Athletic Training program.
“The Master of Science in Athletic Training program at WVU prepares students to provide high quality, patient centered care to a variety of populations across a wide range of health conditions and clinical settings," Mattocks said. "Simulation is becoming an increasingly important component of athletic training education, and our access to STEPS is a tremendous asset to our program. As we prepare the next generation of athletic trainers to provide care to physically active individuals, STEPS allows us to create meaningful, hands-on learning experiences across a variety of clinical scenarios. This resource helps ensure our students graduate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to become confident and highly skilled practitioners.”
Before joining WVU, she spent 20 years as a clinician and educator. She was integral in starting the Master of Science in Athletic Training (AT) Program at Spalding University. Prior to entering athletic training education, Mattocks worked in NCAA Division III athletics, and as a field service representative for DJO, now known as Enovis. She earned her Ph.D. at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky in 2022. Mattocks serves on the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) Education Committee and as a CAATE peer reviewer.
The award honors the late Dr. David Wilks, who led the foundation of STEPS – Simulation Training and Education for Patient Safety at WVU Health Sciences. Dr. Wilks was nationally recognized as an excellent educator and his passion for simulation helped shape the center's work and values.
Dorian Williams, M.D., FAAFP, CHSE, associate dean for Technology and Simulation, professor, and co-director of the WVU School of Medicine Rural Track, presented the award.
