MS4 Class of 2023

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR DECEMBER GRADUATES!!!

The Health Sciences Service Program, administered by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, is accepting applications for the 2022-2023 period. The Health Sciences Service Program is a loan repayment program for medical students interested in practicing in underserved communities in West Virginia. In exchange for receiving the loan repayment program award, participants agree to either work for two years full-time or four years part-time at an eligible work site within West Virginia.

Current West Virginia University fourth-year medical students who are entering primary care or emergency medicine residency programs in WV are eligible for a $30,000 loan repayment award (to be split into two $15,000 disbursements). Recipients can elect to draw down funding during residency or wait until they enter practice. The worksites for primary care physicians that are eligible are:

  • Out-patient primary care sites located within the geographically eligible area of the Service Areas Map (see Primary Care Service Obligation Handbook)
  • Residential care facilities for older adults such as a nursing home located within the geographically eligible area of the Service Areas Map (see Primary Care Service Obligation Handbook)
  • Free clinics located anywhere in the state.
  • Out-patient primary care sites with a facility-based Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) designation such as Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) or School-Based Health Centers located anywhere in the state.

The worksites for emergency medicine physicians are any hospital-based emergency room located anywhere in West Virginia.

Primary care residencies include family medicine, geriatrics, general internal medicine, internal medicine/pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, preventive medicine, and psychiatry.

All required application materials are due January 15, 2023. The application collects information about you, your training, and your interest in practicing medicine in an underserved area. It also requires two letters of recommendation and certification of your enrollment in your training program.

Awards are made by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission’s Division of Health Sciences, based on a competitive process and the recommendations of an advisory panel. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in and commitment to practicing in an underserved area of West Virginia. Other selection factors include background or family ties in an underserved area, and work or living experience in an underserved area. Applicants who are West Virginia residents will be given preference.

Interested students should visit this link College For West Virginia for the application materials. For any questions, please contact Michelle Ruppert at HSSP@wvhepc.edu. Students can also contact Dr. Norman Ferrari or Dr. Scott Cottrell for more information (nferrari@hsc.wvu.edu or scottrell@hsc.wvu.edu).

2023 Summer Research Extern program at CAMC. See attached for more information!

https://www.chla.org/fellowship/summer-oncology-research-fellowship

The Summer Oncology Research Fellowship program is looking for medical student’s medical school to join our research program for an exciting 8-15 weeks during their summer vacation! We are looking for students who are interested in any field related to oncology and our goal is to promote their future success as potential physician-scientists related to oncology!

We are aiming to be an in-person program this year, however, we will convert to a hybrid program depending if there are any COVID restrictions.

We are offering a $600/week subsistence for their summer work.

We encourage a Team Science approach, i.e., multidisciplinary research project with more than one mentor, with one being primary and another being a day-to-day secondary one.

Students are paired with mentor based on their interests and project needs. They are to contact their mentor once paired to receive information on reading and the project. They will then present their project at the end of the summer. We encourage them to set a goal of a peer-reviewed publication and/or conference presentation/abstract/poster/oral presentation.

Our applications are open October 31, 2022 – January 8, 2023 and I do encourage everyone to apply!  If anyone has any questions, please feel free to email me at: HSOP@Chla.usc.edu
