Neonatal, pediatric, and maternal transport program expands

WVU Medicine Children’s has added a second team to its Critical Care Transport Teams to meet the demand of the state and surrounding areas.

The teams, which serve referral sites throughout West Virginia and the surrounding region, provide a state-of-the-art mobile intensive care unit for transport of critically ill patients to WVU Medicine Children’s in Morgantown. The service is available 24/7 and is the only one of its kind in northern West Virginia dedicated exclusively to the transfer of children ranging in age from newborn to 18 years, as well as expectant mothers.

The teams are composed of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and respiratory therapists who are extensively trained in neonatal stabilization, pediatric advanced life support, and emergency services. They use the most up-to-date equipment, including neonatal isolettes, invasive and non-invasive cardio-respiratory monitoring, ventilators, and emergency medications.

Calls to 855-WVU-KIDS are immediately connected to the entire team. A specialized WVU Medicine Children’s critical care transport team is also available for the transfer of maternity patients experiencing a medical emergency. A call to 844-WVU-MOMS initiates the service for pregnant women.
